"Poison filenames" should "work" independent of the file-type.

But what makes them work is getting the system to access them.
In the case of update*.bin files - the system always tries to access them.
I.E: The system automagically tries to use the filename'd file-type.
So maybe they should be called: "Suicide filenames".
