So this discussion really has two components:

• What new features should the UI have?

Sorry, but don't think a "customize everythong" should be a good approach.
Maybe the 2-mode you mention is the way to go, like eeePC basic & advanced desktop. "iliad Classic" and "iLiad Community"... sounds good.
