What might have caused it to be blacklisted? I don't think jailbreaking did it, Amazon seems pretty much okay with that as long as you don't break their terms of service (misuse of the free 3G connection, DRM and all that), which I haven't...

Now that I think of it, this Kindle was bought in the US, and I'm currently located in Europe. I wonder if that might have something to do with it.

I've read something about a hack (update_reginfo) that allowed to register, but it was pretty old, for firmwares older than 3.1, IIRC.
