I agree, which is why I still have my old Kindle Touch.
If you think you can get it to work, go for it! It is well known (well, on MobileRead at least) that Amazon doesn't check the software for jailbreaking. They don't really care, and it's not worth the time for them.
So don't worry about the warranty -- a number of MobileRead members have sent their jailbroken Kindles in on warranty, and Amazon never said a word; I can't think of a single story reported here where they rejected a jailbroken Kindle's warranty.
