Well, as the stores are the ones to decide if they will enforce the new DRM and a lot of devices are no longer supported (Old, manufacturer gone out of business etc) then, yes, I think the new DRM will be in place and devices won't be updated.
It's possible that the devices attached to stores will get an update before they switch. So Kobo and, err, Kobo (Is anyone else left who uses Adept DRM and have a store and their own device?)
Waterstones sells Adept epubs and Kindle eReaders so they already don't care that people who buy books from them will work on the device they buy from them.
Sony is giving up selling eBooks (In the US & Canada at least).
Everyone else selling ePubs leaves it up to you as to which device to buy, so if the Publishers insist on new DRM or you can't sell our books they will switch.
For devices I very much doubt the Jetbook Lite will see an update (Last firmware update in 2010 and no longer sold), Coolreader went bump so no one will update theirs, Hanlin V5's last saw an update back in 2009, I don't remember the Sony 300/505/350/650 ever having an update. This is just from devices
I own that still work perfectly well.
I would assume that RMSDK10 will require more processing power that the current version so old devices may not even be able to run it anyway.
