I have my M92 since February 2012, so that's 2 years now. I am careful with it, but not overly so. I also dropped it a few times, but not from very high up (and it usually slid to the ground rather than fell). When putting it in my bag, I make sure that the screen is right in front of a big plane object like a textbook, laptop or college block, so that any pressure exerted on the device is applied along the entire display and not just locally on a point.
eInk devices above 6" have only recently started to be made with plastic panels; the M92 has a very fine glass panel in front of it, so keep that in mind.

He claims the Kindle DX uses the same screen as the Onyx M92 - I guess you can write the guy and ask. $90 + shipping seems to be worth a shot.
