Does this mean B&N will be forced to either abandon ACS and find a new way to serve up books, or abandon their current passhash DRM and adopt the new Adobe DRM?
Not necessarily.
Nor is it likely.
When B&N licensed Adept for the first Nook, they licensed their proprietary ereader DRM to Adobe for incorporation into ADE alongside Adept (as passhash).
There has been no indication that Adobe exerts and control over Nook's choice of DRM.

In recent months there has been mounting evidence that Adept compatibility has become a negative for Nook's bottom line so if anything, this could provide them with an excuse to part ways with Adobe. Nook has been hemorrhaging market share and money so spending time and money to update their readers just to help Kobo poach their sales doesn't sound like it would be a high priority.
