Hmmm - some idle thoughts:
Its probably reasonable to assume that conversion (ebook-convert.exe) would not process a cover.jpg file as an image as such... i.e. via an imaging library... it would do simple file io to copy it from the book folder into the epub container.
But the book details, cover grid etc (calibre.exe) would process the file as an image - via ImageMagick etc.
However so would the book viewer, but it looks at the embedded cover not the library copy of the cover. If the viewer uses the same imaging libraries etc as the calibre GUI then that would sort of let those libraries off the hook... why would they work in ebook-viewer.exe and not in calibre.exe.
It would be good to know if PeterNL gets the covers embedded with a conversion on his Windows 64bit system, and whether or not he can see them in the ebook-viewer and ebook-editor programs.
