When all those horrible early summer storms came through in 2012, my laptop got fried by a power surge (and while it was plugged into a surge protector, the wired network cable was not).
I had recently been playing around with Linux (Ubuntu) and was *so* happy to have this option to save my files!
Turned out I was able to reimage that computer from the backup disks and my dad's wife if now using it. But I was able to pull all my personal files off via Linux before the reimage.
