Yes, and then the first thing it does is require you to register your device with Kobo's servers, or it will not let you use the device. It should let you connect to your computer though, and you can then edit the database so the device will work, without doing the registration. The same is true for a factory reset, as I remember it. The OP's device was, prior to a "forced" update, operating as he wished - so, the factory reset FW either is, or is from before the FW that gave him the features he is looking for. Also, as I understand it, the registration process will include an update for any FW older than the current version.
With the database edited, a factory reset will not ask for the registration of the device as it thinks it is already registered.
