The first thing to say is that there are no backlit eInk devices. An eInk screen is opaque, and hence cannot be backlit. All the illuminated readers are frontlit.

Other than minor variation in resolution (a lot of the modern devices have a resolution of 1024x768, rather than the older 800x600), I don't think you'll get anything significantly better than you have. You might look at something like the Pocketbook Lux, which has a 1024x768 screen and an SD card slot.
