Firmware updates should have absolutely nothing to do with Special Offers.

But as mentioned previously, you can go to Manage Your Kindle and turn them off -- IF you have paid the additional $20 to opt out, then you can toggle them on and off. If not, then you will be prompted to pay the $20. (You can of course call Customer Service and do it that way. But it works just as well through the web interface.)

I don't think the devs here are really a fan of removing Special Offers without Amazon's consent -- after all, they sell Kindles at a discounted price, in return for showing those ads. So what right do we have to remove them?
