This will require that users upgrade their devices just to be able to read books from a particular publisher or store. The publisher or store is going to catch a lot of heat because of that.

I don't know if Adobe will turn off content server 4, its mostly not happening any time soon.. it depends on all customers, if they have been migrated to latest version of clients. And if the publishers desire it.
That's what I'm saying: Many.... *MANY* customers will be using the current and older crop of e-readers for a *LONG* time to come. There are people here who are still reading on their Kindle 1 or 2, so there will also be people who are reading on EPUB-readers created in 2008-2009. There will also be 2012-ish EPUB-readers that'll stay in use until 2017 or maybe even 2020 and which will never be updated.

This guarantees that the old DRM has to stay around for a long time to come.

You will always be able to read your old 1000s of books in ADE 3.0.
Obviously, but nobody I know reads books in ADE itself.

I think that Don is not referring to the posts as being unhelpful or anything, but toward the displayed attitude that the new DRM won't be any problem and that everything is quite simple. It isn't. Even combining the new ADE 3.x with an old(er) reader creates problems, as ADE 3.x will make the book use new DRM which will prohibit the reader from using the book.

At this point in time, *ALL* EPUB readers that are on sale *NOW* are old readers, so there *WILL* be problems. Even if Adobe provides a download link for ADE 2.x, they'll need to state very clearly why it is there, and why people would want it, or anybody with a currently sold new reader will download ADE 3.x and be in trouble. (This is also true for people who re-install their computer or that sort of thing.)
