So I forsee that many people who don't know much about DRM and stuff might update to ADE 3.0 ("Hey, there's a new version, why not?"), buy a bunch of books, download them, and then find out they won't work with their old reader anymore.

Ya, I use ALF'ed epubs for backup but I mostly use the Kobo kepub version to read, but my first thought was exactly what you said: this is going to be PR, logistics and support NIGHTMARE for Adobe. Anybody new to an ereader is automatically going to download the newest ADE and then be rather annoyed (shall we say to keep this family friendly) when they can't read the book on their shiny new reader. I'm really hoping that there is some misinformation or misunderstanding happening with this.
