If anyone could help that would be great, as this has been bugging me since 2011! It's not Oath of Gold by Elizabeth Moon, though. It is also part of a trilogy (I think).
I've been meaning to respond to this for a while, intending to search cover art sites to see if my suspicions lined up. Unfortunately, I've been too lazy to do even that much, so I have nothing to offer on the cover art. BUT, plot-wise, this reminds me of Paul Edwin Zimmer's "Dark Border" series. My memory is that the second book ends with the death of the major hero, and the damsel in distress being literally eaten alive. What's weird is that everyone insists that this is it--the series ended exactly where the author intended, and there is no third book.
