Are you on the latest firmware for the Touch (3.0.1) and power off the device? If so, the problem is that the SD card isn't read when it starts up. Ejecting the card and reinserting it is all that is needed. Or, letting it sleep and never powering off will also solve this. This is a problem that only affects the Touch. The Glo, Aura and Aura HD all see the SD card at start up.

Also, with the latest firmware, that number of books will work well on the internal memory. There have been recent performance improvements that have kept the Touch as a usable device.

But, if you want a new device, I love my Glo. I currently have 1800 books on it. They are split between the main memory and SD card and I don't have any issues. The larger size of the Aura HD works well for a lot of people. The new Aura is popular because of the capacitive touch screen and overall styling.
