Thanks to everyone for the clarification. I actually have an electric kettle, but it's stainless steel. I never thought of one being plastic, but of course they could be.
Were I writing the sentence though I would say that she
switched the kettle on, as being more illustrative; but that's probably the American (and the editor) in me.
