I would say that stove-top kettles are extremely rare in the UK. Everyone has an electric kettle. At least one. I believe the main reason for this is the different mains power. 240v and a three-pin plug with an earth. It's also the case that coffee doesn't need water to be as hot as tea, but I'm not sure how relevant that is.
