I've had very good luck with dictation; so much so that I pretty much always use it for e-mails or texts on my phone. My technique, such as it is, is to speak one sentence at a time, and slightly over-enunciate. And speak punctuation.
"I-will-meet-you-at-home-in-one-hour-period" (and then hit Done). "Call-me-if-you-will-be-delayed-period" (Done). "See-you-soon-exclamation" (Done).
I find that even if I have to correct a word or two ("Pick up leaks at the grocery"), it is still faster than typing on the phone.
It's my understanding, though, that siri gets better the more you use her, and that there is a specific file for each user that includes information on how that user pronounces words. I'm not sure whether I'm training siri or siri's training me, but I have notice a significant improvement in dictation starting about a year ago.
