That particular Book, as they were called, was probably from an alluvial deposit of quartz, Instead of the dead wood petrifying, quartz minerals may have seeped in, rendering the screens crystalline instead of opaque.
The test of whether it is dead wood or crystal is to wipe it with something greasy and see if it becomes even more transparent, and thus has a high dead wood content.
