It used to be possible to gift books by pressing a Gift button instead of the Buy button, but they took this away along with the eGift card option last year (both worked the same way, you specifed the recipient's email address and they got an email with instructions on how to redeem the gift).

They brought back the eGift card option recently in some countries (the New Zealand site has the eGift option), so maybe they will bring back the book gifting too. No sign of it yet though.
