The worst that could happen is it gets interrupted while writing data to the drive. But I have never worried about that and got along just fine. It depends on the computer you use, and how much data you are writing.

Once upon a time, I believe it was critical to do so, and it's still smart to continue doing it, but it usually doesn't make a difference. All it is doing is making sure all the data was fully written.
