I believe the function you're looking for is only available on the Paperwhite. As near as I can tell, the basic Kindle doesn't have the internal switch needed to make it compatible with a magnetic smart cover; that functionality requires both a magnet in the cover AND a switch in the device. Amazon's own branded cases for that model don't appear to have that ability, so no other brand will either.

That said, while it won't turn the Kindle on and off, there should be at least a couple of off brand cases that are form fitted. I hate straps myself, so I've often had to hunt down cases without them. It may just take some digging through the listings on Amazon to find them, as only the best sellers/highest rated tend to show high up in a search. Often times, the best deals & some of the best cases I've bought may only have a handful of reviews and therefore are hidden quite a few pages deep on a search for "Kindle cover".
