As you drag it displays the book titles or collections well enough so you can see where you are in the alphabet.
I did prefer the alphabetic index, but having gotten used to the slidebar, I am okay with it.

I hadn't realized there was a hidden option to navigate that way. I guess I'll have to give the slidebar a chance now that I know it's there.
