The slidebar comes up when you touch the bottom center of the page. You can either touch a point on the bar or drag. Same as Windows slidebars.
As you drag it displays the book titles or collections well enough so you can see where you are in the alphabet.
I did prefer the alphabetic index, but having gotten used to the slidebar, I am okay with it.
