It's not the formatting so much as they're truly a pain to convert properly to another format.

It's also been used a fair amount for plain old regular linear fiction books which is how most folks I know have encountered it. I get that it was a quick & dirty way to get those books out in the early days of the ebook markets big growth, it's just a shame that a lot of those books have never been replaced with Mobi or KF8 even now that many of them have been done as ePub's.
