This book is not public domain in the US. It is public domain in Life + 50 and Life + 70 countries. As far as illustrations go, I have been informed that there is only a cover.
This is a "poster child" book for the broken US copyright system. When it was published, copyright was 56 years. It should have gone into the US public domain in 1979. But because of extensions of existing work at the lobbying behest of Hollywood studios, it won't go PD in the US until 2019, assuming that Hollywood doesn't lobby to extend the copyright further. The Berne agreement doesn't apply to these works, because the US refuses to fully implement Berne, due to Hollywood lobbying.
(Had it been published 3 months earlier, it would have been in the public domain in 1998. A year and 3 months earlier, and it would have been PD in the US since 1977...)
