Being distinctly old-fashioned (I can recall the excitement of the 2086 chip...) I would expect all those communications privacy settings would be "off" by default, and you have to consciously turn on any one you want to use or allow. I don't use gmail or any other free service; and I don't even use an email client. I work directly in the mailbox of my ISP. Not perfect, but it works for me.

On being computer naive, well, let's be objective: 90 percent or more of people who rush onto the web from their new smartphones/tablets/digital semaphore/discworld clacks are hopelessly computer naive. They have no protection because the default is usually no protection.

Sites like facebook, twitter, youtube etc want you to hang everything out in public because they want the traffic, the more traffic the better, and the free content. They are in effect publishers, whose writers/photographers/etceteras GIVE them the content on which they can hang their profitable ads.

Don't mind me grumbling a bit.
