Yes, they tend to purposely keep the updates to the apps at a lesser level than the Kindles and Fires.

There is no way to make personal docs (files you email to the device or use Send To Kindle to place them in the Cloud) display page numbers in the iOS app. But I've heard you can do so with calibre and sideloaded docs. But these page numbers won't correspond to the print book's page numbers. I've never done it though.
