Chess itself is combat on a board.
Human chess has been around for ever. I watched them play it, with the combat, at ren faires when I was a kid.
As someone said above, it's not the idea that's new, it's how it's spun.
And in any case, I'll remind everyone that Chewbacca and C-3PO played Wizard's Chess/Battle Chess before any of these late-comers.
