Opening the file again today did indeed fix the problem, I'm a bit amazed it could be that easy, but at the same time embarrassed I didn't try that on my own.

As for how I caused it I can't say exactly. The first time it occurred I was renaming the last .html file, after having successfully renamed the previous 22 files. I tried a few more times and then moved on, performing several more edits to the .html files throughout the book (I did have all those files open in tabs, if that could have been part of the problem...) and saving frequently, which is why when I realized I was getting the same error when I attempted any directory-level changes (renaming other files, adding new images), I couldn't just try reverting to before I got the error.
