I have seen a lot of vaporware announcements by other companies; at the very least it will hopefully get them off the dime too.
I ordered mine on the 9th from ereaderoutfiters and it is now on perma-backorder.

Yes, it's indeed the only game in town for now when it comes to large size electronic readers. And now that we are (well, at least I am) over the initial playing/testing phase and associated posting, I have to say I find it quite usable as is, warts and all. Yesterday I got ~7 hours of use out of it, so it seems to be true that the battery life improves after a few charge/discharge conditioning cycles. I really like it, for graphics (my main interest) nothing else comes close.
I'd never have thought about trying to read large-sheet newspapers on such a device (a rather challenging type of PDF actually) But on the reader I can zoom in to a readable size and pan around. Sure it's a bit sluggish, but if you actually take the time to READ rather than skim/test, it's not that bad. I can even do the crosswords and sudoku
And improvements will come, as the Iliad proved (even if not everything will get done).
I hope you'll get yours soon, and can test that 460mb whopper I saw in your folder for yourself
