thanks everyone. i've been playing around with it some more. it seems to be a problem with the touch screen taking a while to be responsive.
when it "freezes" if i leave it on, it will eventually advance the page ... but it might take up to half an hour to do so.
have contacted Kobo support.
I'd bought a store replacement/warranty, but the store I bought it from no longer sells Kobos, they sell Nooks. So they want to replace it with a Nook Simple Touch with Glow Light. not sure what I think about that. I know they have fragile screens. And a bit worried about getting a US-only product like a nook, seeing as I'm in the US only half the year. thoughts?
