Having any type of reader is not a death sentence sort of speak, where you only have to buy books from a seller who sold the device to you.

Calibre is indeed your friend and I buy books from whatever book store I choose. Of course, most of the time it's Amazon because they tend to have the better prices. Since most readers have WIFI now, that is not a big reason to stay away from Amazon.
On another point. I don't think Amazon caused Sony to slither out of the US market. I would worry though about Sony leaving other markets. It doesn't seem like their hearts are really in the ereader market, which is a shame.
