I was one of those people who thought that a lit e-ink screen wasn't worth the extra money and that a little light clipped to the e-reader was just as good, but then I actually got an e-ink reader with a lit screen. The reading experience is so much better that I just plain won't buy an e-reader that isn't lit again. It might seem unnecessary, and I agree it isn't *necessary* in that you can read without it, but it greatly increases the contrast between the type and the background in any situation. It's also great when the lighting is dim of course, but it is a better reading experience no matter what the situation is - outside, indoors, high light, low light.
