I guess it all depends on what someone wants to do with a handheld, which type they prefer. I've heard of people switching both ways, to and from Windows Mobile. Personally I'm sticking with Palm, for now. My T|X will almost certainly fulfill all my needs for years to come, so I'll keep it. In fact, the only reason I could see to get rid of it would be a complete lack of support in applications I want to use (which seems unlikely, as Palm appears to be keeping backwards compatibility in their ALP platform), or when it finally dies (which again seems unlikely, as it seems to be a very solid device).
One thing I will never do is switch to Windows Mobile... I don't use Windows, so I don't get the 'benefits' of having it able to synchronize with Microsoft products (ActiveSync, noted in that article). SynCE is the only sync software for Linux, but it seems a bit limited in what it can sync with currently. Jpilot + Sylpheed-Claws works for me for my PIM/E-mail (since I'm not a KDE/Gnome user - but if I was, their sync 'framework' would probably suit my needs), since Sylpheed-Claws can read (but unfortunately not write to) Jpilot's databases.
So yeah, Palm is the best option for me, and probably for most other non-Windows users. I suppose the difference is that Microsoft spends time making their handhelds work with their OS, as to keep people tied there as much as possible, whereas Palm works with Windows and OSX out of the box, and Linux support is pretty greatly developed by the community.
