I've found that in earlier versions of the firmware since it did not yet have the feature to download synced kepubs to an SDcard when onboard memory is full, you could first install the downgraded FW then fill up the onboard memory with sideloaded epub files till you have less than 80MB free. This will allow syncing with Kobo of any new kepubs you purchase that will fit as well as sync your awards and reading life. This works because the sync process will not be able to completely download the 'new' firmware which occurs at the end of the sync.
