Can you point to the proof? I am on the current firmware and have made no change in my book buying or reading habits. I do buy from Kobo a they tend to be cheapest (with the promo codes) and convenient, but a lot more books come from other sources and are sideloaded with no problem.

But, I do agree that Kobo is unlikely to implement the feature mentioned. You are right, it doesn't fit into Kobo's strategy for the business and the device. The effect can be achieved by sideloading using the USB cable, so Kobo are not really blocking anything, just picking where they are devoting their resources. And personally, I can think of better ways to improve the device.
