As far as I recall, the Nook Color was a LCD screen tablet and not an eInk reader.

The flash being referred to is caused when the screen is written white/black/white to removeghosting -- on most Kobo ereaders, the default is every 6 pages (the Aura with it's Regal technology refreshes once per chapter by default). What I now think you are referring to is due simply to the slowness of the eInk display compared to an LCD display -- you can actually see the screen being rewritten.
