I have the iPad Mini Retina and can read complex/large PDFs on it - however I have very very good near vision with my glasses (which are for high myopia) off

If you don't, or if you just prefer a larger device and a small size isn't a greatly desired characteristic: the Air, if you can afford it, is going to be your best choice.
