I found that after kobo pushed 3.0.1 onto my mark3 Touch the cover images (seen in sleep and off) vanished after the first time I powered off the device and turned it back on. After hard resetting, formatting my uSD card and reloading everything twice over and still not getting sleep/off images I just enabled the feature for Calibre to load cover images. In my case that seems to have done the trick for me, hopefully PeterT's suggestion will work for you.
