AWP does have a learning curve. There is a forum so you can ask questions and they are pretty responsive.

If you are just doing novels, then there doesn't need to be much formatting at all. Things work better if you make Word work as it was intended using styles instead of just using it like a typewriter, so Hitch says. Make sure you are exporting as filtered HTML.

You might look up the comments of Hitch who makes books for a living and has got Word singing to make epubs. I kind of get the drift of what she is saying, but I am a WordPerfect fella when I use a word processor. I think the trick is in the styles and correctly using them.

You would be doing better to see if you can get the add-in going. I think it produces simpler code than Calibre which adds in zillions of its own classes and which works, but is very hard to understand or edit.
