I would have opted for another device over Kindle had any other device had something that wasn't a walled prison/garden.
Alas, I have yet to find an eInk device that is less "locked in" than the Kindle, aside from a rooted Nook. No one ever really mentions the actual details that separate the evil, nefarious DRM encrusted Amazon Kindle ecosystem versus their open and wonderful company or device of choice. I have yet to find any details in my own research.
I would vastly prefer an open alternative, but even then I probably won't buy another device until my current Kindle kicks the can. After that, I may look elsewhere.
