I don't know if this books counts as a romance, but it is primarily a love story (very hard to fit into a category, though).
If you haven't read it yet, I would recommend
Outlander by
Diana Gabaldon.
It is the first book of the Outlander series, was published 20 years ago I believe, so not new by any stretch of the imagination
. The writing and the relationship building in the whole series is so well done, I am eagerly awaiting the 8th book, Written in My Own Heart's Blood, which is due out in June 2014. This book (and the subsequent ones) would be my recommendation.
