To add to the discussion, I define 5-star as "Favourite". I don't rate simply by "quality" really, but more by a mixture of quality and/or impact and/or simple immersion and enjoyment of the story. If a book is high enough in only one of those three areas then it could still be 5-star depending, but usually it's some combination of the three. Like most of us I'd guess, it's really more of an instinct for me than anything else in rating - I don't really try to judge books by some specific criteria; it's more just do I really love it for one reason or another and if yes then it's 5-star.
