You would believe wrong. I've never actually tried it because I tend to read on the road with no Internet connection but whenever I highlight a word a "Wikipedia" option shows up.
As for translations, I don't know whether it will translate actual sentences but I'm pretty sure you can look up individual words. Kobo's dictionary is functional but could be better.
I really love my Kobo Aura (and HD), especially the form factor of the Aura.
