What good are standards when companies slap their own DRM schemes to their titles, thereby rendering them incompatible with ereaders from other companies?

Even though the majority of companies use EPUB for their ereader format, I'm willing to bet that the majority of all ebooks sold in the US are in Kindle format. I can't find any figures on this. Has anyone else been able to?
