The Google Play books should work fine on the kobo anyway, if they're Adobe EPUBs. You'd just need the Adobe Digital Editions software, which you presumably need to download them anyway.

I have a kindle and a kobo touch. I'd say about 95% of my purchases are from amazon. Their base price is typically lower, but kobo will often have good discounts, although they won't work for many of the most popular books.

I must admit I've never really looked at Google Play. Maybe I should.
