I love Moonreader; very customisable yet not slow or bloated.
Background depends on technology; my Samsung Note 1 has an OLED screen, blacks are really black. A black background with white letters (very very slightly less green, very slightly less blue) looks the most pleasant there. But on my ipad air, that has a IPS screen, kind of LCD, I prefer eggbrown background and black letters ( using Marvin).
