How many children do you have? Do any of them have any visual handicaps? how old were they when you upgraded them from playing Angry Birds on an LCD to reading on eInk? How did you handle "oops"es--replace the device and reassure the child that we all make mistakes sometimes or wait until the next birthday or Christmas in the hopes that it will teach them not to repeat the mistake?

I ask because it isn't always easy to tell from print when a person you just met is offering serious advice based on personal experience or is just curious whether the n00b of the moment has a sense of humour.

Thank you for your time and have a nice day.
Nothing in your first post said any of this so to expect anyone to take those type of things into consideration when replaying is unfair. Harry's point is a fair one. There have been many parents who complained about how easily an e-reader can be broken because they thought that the screens would be more durable, like an iPad and, I am assuming, other tablet screens.

My 18 month old man handles our iPads when we leave them in his reach. He is not exactly gentle when we let him use them, sitting on our lap, and the iPads have survived just fine. I would not let him touch my PW screen because it is more sensitive, easy to break then the iPad screen.

That said, plenty of parents have bought e-readers for their kids and have had good luck with them. A good cover can protect them when the e-reader is not in use. If they understand that they need to be careful when holding it, ie don't drop it, don't press to hard, don't leave it some place where you can sit on it or step on it, then an e-reader can be great.

I would suggest the cheapest Kindle available. You already have an Amazon account, you can set parentla controls now so he cannot buy books, and the one year warrenty on a Kindle is great. It will probably even cover a broken screen. At least, it has for some folks in the past.

Keep an eye on Amazon, they have been having sales on the cheapest version. Even without it being on sale, it is a good deal.
